Nearly four years of patient, hand-crafted construction and quality are evident in the Falling Water home - every tight seam, straight line, stone laid; every substantive component - all reflective of a pride in craftsmanship and a discriminating selection of materials.
Upon entry, the Grand Hall rises up more than three levels to a ceiling of gleaming white pine planking and a massive stone fireplace follows the height all the way up. The natural woods both through in and throughout - all exposed woodwork on every surface - was harvested from the owner's properties and hand-milled here on site. The vast dimensions of siding, the breadth of ceiling, the curtains of wainscoting, every plank of flooring and piece of trim, every red-cedared closet - were all cut to meticulous tolerance on this property and carefully assembled.
The kitchen in tasteful rendition is welcoming for chefs and family alike. Adjacent and looking out upon a massive stone courtyard is a breakfast corner, egress provides direct admission and flows further onto a covered rocking deck that wraps around the home to overlook and overhear the rowdy flowing waters just to the foreground. On the opposite side of the kitchen is dining and seating space enough to accommodate our nation's President along with staff and advisors.
The Master's Quarters on this main level occupies an entire side of the residence, a spacious home within a home of open-framed partitions and a private sitting area with warming fireplace. Softly-hued wainscotting of native lumber extends throughout and King and Queen bathrooms with accoutrements bookend each side. From relaxation to entertainment to rest undisturbed, a private retreat within a home. A powder room and laundry complete the ensemble of rooms on the main level.
Upstairs and through a vaulted entry from the staircase are three en suite bedrooms; resplendent, detailed and softly reflective of their natural woody heritage - the Sycamore, the Poplar and the Pine. A central sitting room offers a evening's gathering in front of the fireplace.
On the terrace level resides an en suite bedroom with an efficiency kitchenette. Earthen-hued Saltillo tile finishes off the entire level. Both a residential entry and drive-in garage door provide additional access. Double glass doors allow egress onto a huge covered deck which overlooks the sights and sounds of water in a frothy hurry.
The total of bedrooms and baths within the home - including the Master's Quarter's dual King and Queen baths - is five bedrooms, six baths and one half-bath.
Outside, an astonishing expanse of hand-laid stonework beautifully integrates the proximity of the home and further extends across the property. Every stone in every wall, driveway and walkway was carefully placed by hand and securely anchored and took nearly two years of labor by master stonemasons to lay. In today's dollars the cost of the stone by itself would be some $1.8 million, never mind the additional cost of the hundreds of yards of poured concrete and steel reinforcing that provide an unyielding foundation.
Other structures reside on the property - next to the main residence is the "Bird's Nest" cottage, further out is a toy garage and from there down a stone-walled walking path is a guest cottage and electrical house where a huge Caterpillar generator can supply electricity to the main residence for approximately a month without refueling. Out at the grassland resides a massive carriage house - some 5,000 square feet of steel and trestle - a woodshed and covered shed and the gate house. All of these structures are with exteriors of the native lumbers that were milled on site.
Over a quarter-mile of trophy trout waters - Dick's Creek - flow through the property, alternatively reflective and placid, other times rushing and tumbling boulder-strewn and pouring over granite bedrock in a cascading waterfall. Startling is the clarity of this water from origins in the National Forest lands just upstream, seen and heard from the residence and especially from the cantilevered gazebo that overlooks the Falls, a focal point of total immersion into a profound natural setting.
The property itself is just under ten acres in size with approximately four acres of open and level grasslands with the remainder being blessed with bountiful timber so beautifully native to the Southern Appalachians. The scenic appeal is to be envied by any State Park and the property shares a boundary with the U.S. National Forest.
The location is within the Dahlonega Plateau's "American Viticultural Area" (AVA) and a few minutes from hometown Dahlonega, Southern Living Magazine's "Best Small Town in Georgia". Easily accessible from here are all the natural amenities, activities, vineyards, shops, and charms of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Metro availability is a short commute away but nary a whisper of that extends to here.
